Things You Did Not Know About Me

Rick Liebling tagged me for the 7 Things You Don’t Know About Me meme. So, here we go…

1. I’m addicted to Gossip Girl. As in, I’ve read blogs about the fashion featured in the show. I DVR the episodes. I order them on NetFlix. It’s 90210 meets Cruel Intentions with a beautiful soundtrack and clever dialogue.

2. I have an on-going debate with myself about this blog. My passion is for how people form relationships through online communities and networks. I am just as interested in how business can use new tools to authentically connect with their customers. Much of my consulting work for my company, however, is much more focused on helping businesses generate revenue right now. This includes how to drive qualified traffic for less money, how to increase conversion rates and online promotions that result in sales. I seldom blog about this though. I don’t want to come across as “sales-y” in my blog. I often think that if I only blogged on ways that businesses can generate revenue online I would increase the traffic and the influence of my blog many fold. But it would feel less like me. I haven’t started a second blog because I do not want to begin something I cannot sustain.

3. I love poetry. And the music of words. I have begun to share a few inspirational things here.

4. I have moved many times, many places. 4 lower schools. 3 middle schools. 3 high schools. 2 colleges. When you move so often, I think you make a choice: form no friendships to prevent from feeling hurt when you have to leave or form many friendships very quickly. I selected the latter, and I think these principles have guided me with social media as well.

5. My first love was theater and the character I played with whom I connected the most was Mercutio. There are many connections between theater and marketing, and I often find parallels between the branding process and the art of building a character for the stage.

6. My mother is a storyteller, and she has a large tortoise. When I was young, I would occasionally go with her to see her clients (she worked in sales). The tortoise would frequent sales calls with us and become an entertaining center of attention. She still brings the tortoise to schools and shares stores that even cause the tortoise to roll its eyes.

7. I really love what I do. I’m obsessed with it. I talk about it in my spare time. I watch commercials and comment on what works and doesn’t work. I spread out on the cold library floor to flip through old Life Magazine ads.

Now, I’m going to pass the ball to my friends:
